Thematic Area 2: Effects of Contact and Exchange in the Euro-Mediterranean

The Euro-Mediterranean Area is distinguished by its tremendous variety of various regions and cultures, which nonetheless shared and indeed still share an entangled history from a synchronic as well as a diachronic perspective. The second research area thus aims to analyze the short-term and long-term effects of intercultural communication analyzed in Area 1, which took place with considerable Byzantine intermediation and under Byzantine influence in the Euro-Mediterranean sphere. In a comparative perspective, we will ask how the appropriation of foreign knowledge, ideas and objects had an effect on different regions and/or societies, in particular from a chronological perspective which extends beyond the end of the Byzantine Empire. At the same time, we will consider how and to what degree specific moments of differentiation and rivalry, which played a part in the formation of particular (collective) identities, affected this processes.
