The study of the Roman cult of Mithras has undergone a radical transformation over the past two to three decades. One of the most widespread cults of the Roman world, and one whose archaeological record remains among the most visually striking and popular forms of ancient religious heritage in contemporary museology, the mysteries of Roman Mithras was for a long time studied primarily by scholars of the history of religions, Classical philology, and epigraphy.
During the twentieth century, however, the cult increasingly came to be examined through the perspectives and methodologies of Roman provincial archaeology and the various interdisciplinary approaches of contemporary religious studies. As a result, the study of Mithras has become a particularly productive experimental field for the cognitive science of religion, new approaches in contemporary archaeology, sensory museology, and the study of the reception of antiquity.
The aim of this paper is to highlight the multiple facets of an ancient deity, the diverse dimensions through which the cult of Mithras can be investigated, and the possibilities and limits of interdisciplinarity, with particular reference to the archaeology of mithraea from the Danubian provinces.
